We have seen a marked increase in the use of Hitler references lately emanating from the right wing. Personally i find this pretty disturbing. I am not writing one of those posts with pictures of the bodies of concentration camp victims in it because i always find those to be incredibly disturbing as well. It is well worth remembering the fact though that Hitler is one of the worst people in world history. I have to believe that these people know deep down that using Hitler is way over the top.
There is a classic piece by Jon Stewart on the use of Hitler references which failed to embed but can be seen here.
Stewart may be using humor but his point is sound. The level of evil perpetrated by the nazis is extreme. Maybe as we get further away in time from the events of WWII we are forgetting exactly what Hitler and the nazis did. If so this is a shame. Hitler killed millions of people and tried to wipe out entire ethnic groups from the face of the planet.
If people are forgetting exactly who and what Hitler was and the magnitude of his crimes maybe we should spend a week where everyone in the country has to learn in detail about what he did. Is there any other way to have people return to an understanding of the gravity of hitler and WWII?
As always there is some blame that may be placed on the media for not being more aggressive in calling out and rebuking people who use hitler references or compare people to hitler. i dont care which side your on but calling someone hitler or using the comparison to hitler is wrong. Dont trivialize the deaths of the millions of people who fought against hitler or were his victims. stop using the hitler references.
